Padel for Beginners: 7 Tips for Your First Session

Tips for your very first padel session — what to wear, what to expect, and how to enjoy every minute.

Walking onto a padel court for the first time is exciting and a little intimidating. Don't worry — padel is one of the most beginner-friendly racket sports in the world, and these seven tips will make sure your first session is the kind that makes you book your second one before you've even left the club.

1. Take a beginner lesson — don't just rent a court

The single best decision a beginner can make is to book a 60-minute group or private lesson before you ever play a match. A coach will teach you the grip, basic shots, court positioning and how to use the walls. You'll learn more in 60 minutes with a coach than 10 hours of trial-and-error on your own.

2. Wear sneakers with good lateral grip

Padel involves lots of side-to-side movement. Running shoes will work for your first session but specialist padel or court shoes (or any decent indoor sport shoe) will keep your ankles safer.

3. Borrow rackets and balls — don't buy yet

Every good padel club rents rackets and balls. Use those for your first 3–5 sessions. Padel rackets vary massively (round, teardrop, diamond shapes) and you won't know what suits your style yet.

4. Stay close to your partner

The biggest beginner mistake: drifting apart from your partner. You should always be roughly side-by-side, moving together. If your partner is at the net, you should be at the net too. If they retreat, you retreat together.

5. The walls are your friend

Beginners panic when the ball bounces off the wall. Don't. Wait for it, watch it, and play it like a normal shot off the bounce. The walls give you extra time, not less.

6. Aim down the middle

When in doubt, hit the ball through the middle of the court between the two opponents. It causes confusion and is the safest tactical play in padel.

7. Have fun and book the next session

Padel is addictive. By the end of your first session you'll already be improving. Lock in your next slot before you leave the club — momentum matters when you're learning a new sport.
