Every padel session at Padel Tropical starts the same way: ten minutes of targeted warmup that prepares your body for the explosive lateral movements, overhead shots, and quick reflexes that padel demands. Skipping the warmup is the fastest way to get injured — and padel injuries are almost always preventable. Here's the exact routine our coaches recommend, designed specifically for padel's unique movement patterns.
Why padel needs a specific warmup
Padel involves a combination of movements that few other sports replicate: lateral shuffles, forward sprints, backward retreats, overhead reaches, and rapid changes of direction — often on a surface that grips your feet firmly. Without proper preparation, the ankles, knees, shoulders, and lower back are all vulnerable.
In tropical conditions like Koh Samui, the heat helps — your muscles warm up faster and stay loose longer. But the heat also increases the risk of dehydration and fatigue, which means your warmup should include hydration as well as movement. Drink at least 200ml of water before you step on court.
Minutes 1–3: joint mobility
Start with gentle joint circles to lubricate the synovial fluid in your major joints. Ankle circles (10 each direction), knee circles (10 each direction), hip circles (10 each direction), arm circles (10 forward, 10 backward), and neck rotations (5 each direction).
These aren't stretches — they're controlled, smooth movements through each joint's full range of motion. Keep the movement gentle and rhythmic. The goal is to wake up your joints, not push their limits.
Minutes 3–5: dynamic stretches
Move into dynamic stretches that target the muscle groups padel uses most. Walking lunges (8 each leg) open up the hip flexors and activate the glutes. Lateral shuffles (10 metres each direction) prepare the adductors and abductors for side-to-side movement. High knees (20 total) and butt kicks (20 total) activate the hamstrings and quads.
Add torso rotations while walking — hands on hips, twist left and right with each step. This prepares the core and spine for the rotational demands of forehands, backhands, and overheads.
Minutes 5–7: padel-specific movements
Simulate the movements you'll actually use on court. Split steps — the ready position where you hop lightly on both feet before reacting to the ball — are the foundation of padel movement. Practice 10 split steps in a row, landing softly on the balls of your feet.
Then practice lateral push-offs: from a split step, push off your right foot to shuffle left, then push off your left foot to shuffle right. Do this 10 times. These movements mirror the side-to-side coverage you'll need during rallies.
Finally, practice 5 to 10 overhead reaching motions — extend your racket arm above your head as if hitting a bandeja or smash. Rotate your shoulders through the full range. This prepares the rotator cuff and shoulder joint for overhead shots.
Minutes 7–10: light rally
Grab a partner and rally gently from the service line. Start with soft volleys back and forth — this warms up your hands, wrists, and eyes while calibrating your timing. After a minute, move to groundstrokes from the back of the court at moderate pace.
Don't try to hit winners during warmup. The goal is rhythm, feel, and gradually increasing intensity. By the end of the 10-minute warmup, your heart rate should be elevated, your joints should feel loose, and your muscles should feel warm and responsive.
At Padel Tropical, we build this warmup into every coaching session and encourage all players to arrive 10 minutes early for self-directed warmup. It's the simplest investment you can make in your padel longevity — and your performance.
